Massacre of part of the mutineers (Christian, Mills, Brown, Williams, and Martin) by the Tahitians. The Tahiti men all killed, part by jealousy among themselves, and others by the remaining Englishmen. Mary Christian born.
A great desire in many of the women to leave the island; a boat built on purpose to remove them, launched, and upset. Fortunately for them that she did so; for had she launched out upon the ocean, where could they have gone? or what could a few ignorant women have done by themselves, drifting upon the waves? They must ultimately have fallen a sacrifice to their folly.
August 16th, a grave was dug, and the bones of all the white men that had been murdered were buried.
Aug. 17th, the first boat built and launched.
Oct. 3rd, the celebration of the murder of the Tahitians was held at Quintal’s house.
Nov. 11th, a conspiracy of the women to kill all the white men when asleep in their beds was discovered; they were all seized, a disclosure ensued, and all were pardoned.
Nov. 30th, the women attacked the white men, but no one was hurt; they were once more pardoned, and threatened the next time with death.
May 6th, the first two canoes for the purpose of catching fish were made. Saw a vessel close in with the island; mutineers much alarmed; vessel stood out to sea, Dec. 27th.
Endeavoured to procure a quantity of meat for salting, and to make syrup from the ti-plant (Dracaena terminalis) and sugar-cane.
April 20th, M’Coy distilled a bottle of ardent spirits from the ti-root; the copper kettle of the Bounty made into a still—frequent intoxication the consequence; M’Coy in particular, who had fits of delirium, in one of which he fastened a stone round his neck, threw him self off the rocks into the sea, and was drowned.
Matthew Quintal, having threatened to take the life of Young and Adams, which failed, the consequence was, that Young and Adams considered their lives in danger, and thought they were justified in taking away his life, which they did with an axe.
Sarah M’Coy, alias Quintal, Dinah Adams, Polly Young, John Mills, Robert Young, George Young, William Young, Edward Young, Dolly Young, Jane Quintal, Arthur Quintal, J. James Young, and Rebecca [Rachael] Adams, were born. Quintal lost his wife by a fall from the cliff; while in search of birds’ eggs.
